Kindle with Ads: $114 and Coming Your Way

What would you say if I told you that Amazon is lowering the price of the Kindle by $25? What if that meant you had to deal with ads? Bummer, right? What if I then told you that the ads wouldn’t appear while you were reading, just on the home page and screensavers? Okay, enough with the questions.

Amazon has announced that starting May 3rd, they will begin shipping their new “Kindle with Special Offers.” The new version of the popular e-reader will be $114, 18% less than the current cost of the original Kindle ($139).

The ‘”special offers” that readers see will apparently not interrupt reading at all. Amazon has listed some of the initial offerings that will be available to users when the product first rolls out:

  • $10 for $20 Amazon.com Gift Card
  • $6 for 6 Audible Books (normally $68)
  • $1 for an album in the Amazon MP3 Store (choose from over 1 million albums)
  • $10 for $30 of products in the Amazon Denim Shop or Amazon Swim Shop
  • Free $100 Amazon.com Gift Card when you get an Amazon Rewards Visa Card (normally $30)
  • Buy one of 30 Kindle bestsellers with your Visa card and get $10 Amazon.com credit
  • 50% off Roku Streaming Player (normally $99)

The screensavers will be sponsored by Amazon partners Visa, Olay, Buick and Chase when the product launches, and they will look like this on your Kindle:

Users will be able to have some control over what type of screensavers they see, as Amazon is introducing “AdMash,” a free app that presents two screensaver options to readers and asks them to select the one that they like the most (or can tolerate the most, or despise the least). Those votes are tracked, and the most preferred sponsored screensavers are the ones that stick around.

On an options screen, users will also be able to select which type of screensavers they would like to see most, such as nature instead of architecture or modern images instead of country scenes.

In a statement on the amazon.com home page, CEO Jeff Bezos says that they are “working hard to makes sure that anyone who wants a Kindle can afford one.” $114 is a low price point for a Kindle, and the way they have structured the ads seems to be as minimal of an annoyance as possible. As someone who loves to read and has never bought the ads-free version of Words with Friends, this offer interests me. I am a little surprised the price wasn’t set lower, however. How often is someone able to afford $114 in discretionary spending but not $139?

However the sales shake out, this writer is thrilled whenever reading gets cheaper. Seriously, read books. Lots of ‘em.

Mitt Romney’s 2012 Presidential Campaign Launches Via Social Media

Mitt Romney has announced the formation of an exploratory committee for a 2012 presidential bid via YouTube, and Twitter.

In the 2:30 video, the former governor of Massachesetts, talks about unemployment, foreclosures, and even gives Obama a ribbing over his policies. Romney also states, “He and the people around him have never worked in the real economy. They just don’t know how jobs are created in the private sector.”

How much social media play a role in the race to the White House? Let us know what you think.

I am announcing my Exploratory Committee for President of the United States. Join us at http://www.mittromney.com #Mitt2012 17 hours ago via web · powered by @socialditto

Romney’s video went live on Monday, just a week after we saw President Obama launch his 2012 reelection bid.

Even in its infancy, you can tell that the 2012 presidential race will be much more social media centric. During the 2008 campaign we saw Barack Obama essentially pioneer using Facebook and Twitter to reach the masses, while his competitor, John McCain, ran a more traditional campaign.

Do you think we’ve seen the last of the traditional political campaign? Leave your thoughts.

Kiip Offers Ad Based Rewards For Mobile Gaming

Imagine playing your favorite game on the iPhone, and upon making it to the final level and defeating the stage boss you’re offered a free cheeseburger at your favorite restaurant. Would such a system bring about positive or negative feelings from your gaming experience? Free stuff in the real world, based upon your performance in a mobile game. How are we just now coming up with this idea?

Kiip, an advertising network, plans to implement such a system. Their website tagline explains how it works – “Real rewards for virtual achievements“. Here’s a video going into a bit more detail about how Kiip works:

Kiip isn’t the first to offer real world rewards for playing a video game. However, their network has the potential to bring the idea of real world rewards for gameplay achievements to the mainstream.

If you’ve played free games on your mobile devices, chances are they are plagued with in-game advertising, which allows them to remain free. More often than not this really brings down a gaming experience, especially if the ads ruin your concentration. However, Kiip works like an achievement system so a pop-up wouldn’t occur until you actually complete a stage or objective.

According to Wired.com, the system simply requires a user to submit their email address to have their reward sent to them. Players aren’t required to sign up for a Kiip account, so the emails are only used to send them their branded reward. The network is based on HTML5 coding, so any system is compatible with the service. The only requirement is that it’s connected to the internet.

Though Kiip sounds interesting in theory, will it translate to success in real life? According to limited trials, players signed up for the achievement deals over 50 percent of the time. When’s the last time an advertising campaign saw those kinds of click-through rates?

At the head of Kiip is an internet prodigy, Brian Wong. If you’ve heard of Wong, it’s because at 18 years old he was able to land a job working for Digg. Upon leaving the company, he came up with the idea for Kiip.

To help keep a balance of how often rewards can be utilized, developers are provided a set amount of opportunities to utilize Kiip. Also, the system is set on a rotating variable so users aren’t going to be presented with a reward every time the same achievement is earned.

Upon reading about Kiip, I sent them a question in regards to how detailed developers could get in terms of which advertisers would be presented in their game. I presented a scenario where Coca-Cola released a game, and wouldn’t want a Pepsi reward popping up.

Here’s Wong’s response, “Users don’t choose what rewards they’ll see. The brands are able to set criteria for their target market. With verticals, through frequency capping, we’re able to guarantee that no competing products in the same space will appear in the same session.”

I think Kiip has a an interesting idea which could not only evolve in-game advertising, but mobile advertising as a whole. Imagine if such a system were utilized for check-in services as well, where surprise rewards would pop-up for checking in certain places.

The only roadblock keeping them back would be heavy saturation of their system on the market. There’s no set list of games where Kiip is being featured; they want their network to integrate naturally into the market. Coupled with their limiting algorithms and allowing developers a set amount of rewards to provide, they look to have all their ducks in a row.

Get More Traffic From Twitter With These 6 Great Headline Tips

So, you have all those followers on Twitter and yet when you tweet a link to your latest blog post…..nothing much happens!

Why did so few of those hundreds (or thousands) of your followers click your link; after all, it’s a great post?

Your headline let you down!

People will ONLY click your links and read your content, if the headline or title is compelling enough. If just a small percentage of your followers are clicking on your links, it’s because the headline isn’t selling that link to your followers. It’s not compelling them enough, to make them want to click through to your site and find out more. Unless they do that, they will never know how great your posts are, which is why headlines are easily the most important element of your content.

Your headlines or titles are what open the door to your content. To succeed, your content has to be effective too, but nothing happens until people actually READ what you have written and your headline is what either encourages them to read the first line of your material – Or not. Get the headline wrong and you make it very hard for your content to get noticed.

6 headline secrets behind yesterday’s post

To show you what I mean, I will use the example of yesterday’s post, which was extremely successful. It’s title was: Build a great client list with this 1 simple idea. Here are six of the secrets behind it.

The headline didn’t try and do everything. There was enough information in that headline to explain what the post was about and get the reader curious. To discover what the “1 simple idea” is, the reader has to click through. The more curious you can make someone, the more likely they are to take action; in this case click a link.

The headline was relevant to my readers. It was a marketing related headline and my friends on social networks connect with me because they are interested in marketing.

The headline made a compelling promise. Every headline makes a promise to the reader. The promise of that headline, is that if they click that link, I will give them some valuable information, which will help them with a huge problem; attracting better clients. The post content delivers on the promise, which is essential if you want people to come back! A great headline, which points to a post that fails to deliver on the headline’s promise, will cause people to feel cheated and stop them trusting your headlines and links in future.

The headline let people know it was easy. Part of the headline’s promise, is that they will learn this valuable information, quickly and easily. It’s just 1 simple idea. This requires little time investment from the reader, with the potential to learn some valuable business information.

The headline didn’t keyword stuff. Some people seem to believe that the only way to attract search engine traffic, is to stuff their headlines with keywords. This is flawed for 2 reasons.

  1. You can SEO your posts, by making the version of the title which people see, different from the version which search engines see. If you use WordPress, there are plugins that allow you to do this. If, like me, you use the Headway WordPress Theme, (affiliate link) you don’t need to mess around with plugins, it’s there out of the box (along with a ton of other great SEO features!)

  2. Your content, including titles, should be written for people, NOT search engines. If you try and write posts that appeal to search engines rather than people, even if someone does find your site on Google or Bing etc, it will read poorly and therefore fail to convert them into subscribers, clients or customers.

The headline wasn’t clever. Some people write clever headlines, which lack any compelling reason for a busy person to click their link. They are often abstract or cryptic, rather than interest grabbing and inspiring.

Headlines are important so give them the time they deserve

There are very few things in life, which come with a guarantee, however, I can guarantee that if you make your blog post titles more compelling, you will definitely get more traffic from social networks and feedreaders.

Invest as much time as is required, to get your headlines as attractive as possible and just watch the increase in your blogging results.

Baidu’s Stock Up On Word Of Facebook Partnership

The stock market, as a whole, did not do well today. The Dow and Nasdaq stayed about level, gaining and losing 0.01 percent and 0.32 percent, respectively, while AOL, Apple, and Yahoo all suffered losses of greater than 1.00 percent. But Baidu’s stock rose by a significant amount thanks to news that it’s partnered with Facebook.

Some background info on that development: as we reported earlier, Facebook and Baidu are supposed to be working together on a new, China-specific social network. And that has a sort of unstoppable sound to it, considering Facebook’s expertise in the field and Baidu’s search dominance in China.

So if the social network comes into being, proves popular, and attracts advertisers (who should already be more than familiar with Baidu), it could represent a significant new stream of revenue for whatever parties share in the profits.

More than a few investors have apparently perceived and bet on that possibility. Baidu’s stock jumped 2.68 percent during normal trading hours today, putting its market cap at an impressive $50.63 billion.

By comparison, the respective market caps of AOL, IAC, Yahoo, and eBay are just $2.11 billion, $2.72 billion, $21.72 billion, and $40.47 billion.

Of course, the trick will be seeing if Baidu’s stock manages to sustain these levels over time. Baidu and Facebook still haven’t confirmed the existence of any alliance, and even if they are working together, it’ll probably take more than a few weeks for their new social network to come together.

Baidu will have to deliver its first quarter earnings report soon, too, which is sure to have an effect one way or the other.

George Hotz, Sony Settle PS3 Hacking Suit

Sony and hacker George Hotz, better known as geohot, have been involved in a lawsuit since Hotz jailbroke the PS3 and posted his exploits online. The PS3 had been notoriously hard to crack, and Hotz’s accomplishment allowed owners to bypass many of the PS3′s internal security measures. Sony sued Hotz for computer fraud and copyright infringement among other things.

On January 27th, Sony won a temporary restraining order that barred Hotz from distributing any information on the hack and also forced him to surrender his computer and materials to Sony. Due to issues regarding proper venue for the suit, last month Sony was granted access to the IP addresses of users who visited Hotz’s blog in order to establish jurisdiction.

This battle has spawned outrage from people who see Hotz’s first amendment rights trampled by a large corporation with enormous resources. Many question the right Sony or any corporation has to influence the use of personal property – basically if you buy it, it’s yours, end of question.

Today, Sony and Hotz have posted a joint statement on the PlayStation blog. In the statement, we learn that the two came to an agreement rather quietly on March 31st. In the agreement, Hotz is permanently banned from disseminating his methods for hacking the PS3.

Sony Computer Entertainment America (“SCEA”) and George Hotz (“Hotz”) today announced the settlement of the lawsuit filed by SCEA against Hotz in federal court in San Francisco, California. The parties reached an agreement in principle on March 31, 2011. As part of the settlement, Hotz consented to a permanent injunction.

Both parties expressed satisfaction that litigation had been quickly resolved. “Sony is glad to put this litigation behind us,” said Riley Russell, General Counsel for SCEA. “Our motivation for bringing this litigation was to protect our intellectual property and our consumers. We believe this settlement and the permanent injunction achieve this goal.”

“It was never my intention to cause any users trouble or to make piracy easier,” said Hotz, “I’m happy to have the litigation behind me.” Hotz was not involved in the recent attacks on Sony’s internet services and websites.

In the action, SCEA accused Hotz of violating federal law by posting online information about the security system in the PlayStation 3 videogame console and software that SCEA claimed could be used to circumvent the security system in the console and allow the playing of pirated videogames. Hotz denies any wrongdoing on his part. Hotz’s motion to dismiss for lack of personal jurisdiction was still pending before the federal court in San Francisco but a preliminary injunction was issued requiring Hotz to take down the postings challenged by SCEA.

“We want our consumers to be able to enjoy our devices and products in a safe and fun environment and we want to protect the hard work of the talented engineers, artists, musicians and game designers who make PlayStation games and support the PlayStation Network,” added Russell. “We appreciate Mr. Hotz’s willingness to address the legal issues involved in this case and work with us to quickly bring this matter to an early resolution.”

What do you think about the Sony / Geohot suit? Is it a first amendment issue? Let us know how you feel.

Google Panda Update Officially Goes Global (In English)

Earlier, we reported that webmasters were finding signs indicating the Panda update may have been launched in more countries. Now, Google has addressed it in a post on the Webmaster Central Blog.

They’ve rolled out the update globally to all English-language Google users. “We will continue testing and refining the change before expanding to additional languages, and we’ll be sure to post an update when we have more to share,” says Google’s Amit Singhal.

Singhal also says Google has incorporated “new user feedback signals”.

“In some high-confidence situations, we are beginning to incorporate data about the sites that users block into our algorithms,” he says. “In addition, this change also goes deeper into the ‘long tail’ of low-quality websites to return higher-quality results where the algorithm might not have been able to make an assessment before. The impact of these new signals is smaller in scope than the original change: about 2% of U.S. queries are affected by a reasonable amount, compared with almost 12% of U.S. queries for the original change.”

It would be very interesting to know what constitutes a “high-confidence situation”. Domain blocking as a ranking signal could be a tricky area, in terms of the potential for abuse. The company has said in the past that it would look at making this a ranking signal, and that it would tread lightly.

“Based on our testing, we’ve found the algorithm is very accurate at detecting site quality,” he says. “If you believe your site is high-quality and has been impacted by this change, we encourage you to evaluate the different aspects of your site extensively.”

Well, that’s exactly what we’ve seen a lot of sites doing. Whether or not it has been working for them remains to be seen. It’s going to be a matter of time.

Singhal does say webmasters should look at Google’s own quality guidelines. He also suggests posting in the Webmaster Help Forum. “While we aren’t making any manual exceptions, we will consider this feedback as we continue to refine our algorithms,” he says.

Now the fun really begins. Now we can see how hard some of the sites that were already heavily impacted by the Panda update get hit on a global scale.

Winklevoss Twins / Facebook Battle Over?

Earlier this year, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss as well as Divya Narendra decided that the settlement they had reached with Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook was no longer satisfactory. They elected to turn down the agreement in order to seek more from the world’s largest social networking company.

As most of you have been following this story since the beginning and/or have seen the Academy Award nominated faux-documentary The Social Network, we shall keep the background to a minimum.

While all of the players in this suit attended Harvard University, the twins (from now on known as Winklevii) created ConnectU, a social networking startup. They claimed that Zuckerberg ripped off their idea when he created Facebook, and feel as though they are entitled to a large percentage of its worth. Zuckerberg denies the claim. The original settlement was for Facebook to pay the Winklevii $20 million in cash and $45 in stock. In January, the Winklevii argued that Facebook did not disclose certain internal valuations, and therefore their payout should have been much larger.

Well, today the battle may be over as the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decided that the original settlement will be enforced. As quoted in Reuters:

“At some point, litigation must come to an end,” Chief Judge Alex Kozinski wrote. “That point has now been reached.”

So, the Winklevii were ripped off by the callous Zuckerberg or they scored a whole bunch of dough for doing absolutely nothing – either way it seems as though the drawn out litigation might be over. Sadly, there now may not be enough material for Social Network 2 : The Legend of Zucky’s Gold.

Google Panda Update Launched in More Countries

If you’ve been following the search industry for the last month or two, I probably don’t have to tell you have big an impact Google’s Panda update has had on a lot of sites. Google had only rolled the update out in the U.S. and it has already sent tremendous ripples throughout the web in terms of traffic and search engine rankings.

A lot of webmasters felt that their sites were undeserving of being victimized by the update, while many were more obviously the intended targets. Either way, it was just in the U.S. and publishers have been bracing (by scrambling to improve quality of content/design) for the next wave of the Panda update – the expansion into other countries.

There is some talk in the Webmaster World forum by webmasters who think it has indeed begun rolling out in other countries. So far, this is unconfirmed.

“Today, for the first time, after checking daily, I can now see US Panda results on Google properties worldwide including but not limited to: .co.uk, .ca, .co.in, .com.au, .fr, .de, .se, etc,” said user incrediBILL, who started a thread on the topic. He later added, “I see the same results on multiple non-US data centers…However, it could be rolling out in waves meaning I’m seeing a segment of the index changed others aren’t seeing yet, but the US Panda results for my niches and some other stuff I track are now worldwide best I can tell.”

“It has definitely hit the UK, my sites have been hit pretty hard -80% in the last couple of hours,” another user, c41lum, said.

“It has been live in France for a while now ..but only over the last 48/72 hours have I seen it hammering directories and public info scraper/repackagers hard..they were moving agitatedly before..now some are dropping hard ( 100 to 200 places ) all across the sites,” wrote user Leosghost. “It has hit very hard over the last 15 to 21 days on the shopping comparative sites that just acted as “bridge” pages / aff feeders to other sites ( who frequently did not have the goods ).So no loss there..IMO.”

Throughout the thread there is a mixture of people indicating that their sites have also been affected, and some who haven’t noticed any change.

Again, whether or not this is Panda rolling out in these other countries is unconfirmed. Google has yet to respond to a request for comment. It’s worth noting that Google did make a very public (and proud) announcement when the update was initially launched in the U.S. It’s hard to say if we could expect them to do the same for the rest of the world, though the original announcement did say, “To start with, we’re launching this change in the U.S. only; we plan to roll it out elsewhere over time. We’ll keep you posted as we roll this and other changes out, and as always please keep giving us feedback about the quality of our results because it really helps us to improve Google Search.”

They’ll keep us posted. It would seem that this was either an empty promise, or Panda has not rolled out to more countries yet.

Update: Google has made it official. More here.

Postlets Acquired by Zillow

Online Real Estate giant Zillow announced that it has acquired Postlets for an undisclosed sum.

“Real estate professionals love Postlets because you create a property listing just once, and Postlets automatically distributes it across the Web,” said Zillow CEO Spencer Rascoff on the Zillow Blog. “Plus, when you create an account on Postlets, you get a personalized landing page so you can showcase all of your ‘Postlets’ in one place. You can then customize your personal gallery with a company logo and an ‘about me’ page where you can describe your services and upload a personal photo to help you gain even more exposure. And it’s free.”

According to Zillow, Postlets already has over 500,000 registered users with 350,000 sales/rental listings.

“Our goal over the past several years has been to develop simple yet innovative products that redefine real estate marketing and search,” the Postlets team said on its blog. “This deal represents a fantastic opportunity to work with some of the most amazing people in the industry and build all of the things we said we would — and much, much more. We’re extremely excited that Zillow shares our vision and is committed to invest in Postlets to deliver tools that will further help you build your business.”

“Ask anyone in the industry, and they’ll tell you that Postlets is a great tool for agents, property managers and landlords looking to promote their listings and manage their online presence, for free,” said Rascoff. “As part of this acquisition, Postlets will continue to send listings to its current distribution partners.”

Zillow’s own traffic has been on the steady increase over the past year, having nearly doubled according to Compete’s numbers.

Postlets says it will reveal more details about what the acquisition means for the company and users in the coming weeks, but promises that it will continue to operate the same.

Long-tail Keyword – Stretch the Tail for More Conversions

Many organic campaigns start out with high expectations. There is clear focus and intent on working head keywords to drive traffic and begin branding efforts. However every seasoned SEO knows that with a focused plan, heads will eventually turn to tails. Remain pertinacious, and the the tail will continue to grow and ultimately result in what is known as the long-tail keyword phenomena – a converting machine.

Definition and History of the Long-Tail Keyword

The long-tail keyword is simply a combination of multiple words (usually 3 or more), that are specific and relevant to a product or service sold. In essence, long tails are considerably more definitive and often times used to refine the search process by the visitor.

Targeted buyers anyone?

The long-tail was first introduced by Chris Anderson, which later resulted in the popular book: “The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More” in 2006.

The premise of the long-tail is a Pareto Distribution combined with web technology, to introduce the concept of a larger proportion of “buyers” exist in the tail of the distribution. We no longer need to target the head of the distribution scale to produce results, as we did in traditional marketing times. Keep in mind, the theory behind the long-tail is one of shifting away from a relatively smallnumber of searches at the head to a huge number of niches in the tail.

Right Church, Wrong Pew?

If long-tail keywords convert so well, why is there such a high degree of emphasis placed on the head keywords at the onset of a campaign? That’s simple, we’re human and want hard and fast results.

The intent from many organic campaigns is to rank for head or brand keywords in an effort to gain traction in a market. Initial keyword research will show that the head is “where the action is” and becomes too tempting to pass up.

There is one problem though.

Head keywords are often times, too broad and correspond only to people at the initial phase of a buying cycle or information-seeking mode. Hardly an equation for converting visitors. Normally, the long-tail becomes a force when content becomes ingrained in the site. When you look at the web analytics of a mature site with a multitude of tail niches, head keywords represent only a small piece of the overall traffic.

“Forget squeezing millions from a few mega hits at the top of the charts. The future of entertainment is in the millions of niche markets at the shallow end of the bit stream.” – Chris Anderson

Welcome to the World of the Long-Tail

Depending on market and site authority, there will be anywhere from 3 to 20 head keywords.

The Figure 1 shows a graph of how a head and tail keyword would look in a typical market. The dotted line represents where the head separates from the tail. This is also where the magic begins.

Long tail Figure 1

For illustration purposes, below is a recap of one of my sites for a recent 30- day period:

  • 42,268 Total Visits
  • 36,457 Visits from Search
  • 17,424 Keywords from Search
  • Top 10 keywords made up 2,727searches
  • Top 10 keywords consisted of 7% of the total searches.
  • Over 36,000 visits resulted from over 17,000 different keywords!

Lesson learned: you will receive a great deal of volume from the top 10 keywords. However, the numbers pale in comparison to the aggregate total of searches from the other 17,000 keywords.

Search Optimization: Achieving Power with SEO and SEM

Okay, so we know the long-tail keyword is powerful, how do we work a campaign to achieve long-tail and highly targeted results? Every word on your site is a potential keyword, therefore content is the answer.

If SEO execution is adequate at the beginning, companies should easily rank for their products or company name.

While the initial SEO campaign begins to pick up steam, Pay per Click (PPC) can work the tail and long-tail keywords. PPC can prove an invaluable and cost-effective tool to measure and test conversions. The results can then be used to ramp-up an aggressive and highly targeted organic campaign.

Leveraging SEO to brand and unleashing PPC for the long-tail, is a powerful combination that works very well at the onset of your campaign.

Producing tail-bias content is one of the most effective ways to increase the tail of your marketing campaign. Below, is one of many methods to “cherry pick” long-tail keywords and incorporate them naturally into your content to increase search volume over time:

Summary of the Long-tail Keyword Content Creation Method:

1. Using Google Adwords keyword tool, select your main targeted tail keywords (usually one or two main tail keywords) that have decent traffic.

2. Using the same tool, select 3-5 similar longer-tail keywords that have lower traffic volumes than the targeted keywords.

3. Write your content targeting the primary tail keywords, sprinkling the long-tail keywords into the content naturally.

Summary

Key Takeaways:

  • Long-tail keywords reside toward the end of the Pareto Distribution channel.
  • Many leaders of web strategies will want to focus only on head keywords for immediate results and branding.
  • Leverage SEO and SEM strengths at the onset of your campaign for best results.
  • Long-tail keywords from a healthy head and tail, will result in targeted buyers.
  • As a site matures and content increases, tail keywords will increase as well.
  • For a mature site, the majority of your traffic will come from long-tail keywords.
  • Increase long-tail keywords by increasing content and targeting long-tails in your content.

The long-tail keyword is one of the best ways to target buyers of a market. People at the end of a tail keyword can also be at the end of the buying cycle.

A long term plan of consistently creating quality content using several long-tail keywords, will slowly add massive keyword substance to your site and increase conversions.

The New Yorker Promotes Facebook Only Content

One of the biggest, if not the most important issue in journalism right now is the transition into the digital age. Venerable print news outlets are struggling with the onslaught of readily available, free information on the internet. The ones that have any chance of surviving have to stay relevant in a rapidly changing journalism scene where everyone is a reporter, and sometimes our attention spans short out after 140 characters.

Paywalls are always an iffy proposition, as outlets struggle to find a compromise that will keep readers loyal with fair pricing as well as generate revenue. Newsday famously managed to attract 35 new subscribers in its first 3 months with a paywall. Most recently, the New York Times’ institution of its paywall has also gone less than swimmingly.

How do traditional journalistic outlets engage a new generation of readers? Well, possibly through social media like Facebook.

The New Yorker, the long-standing magazine filled with reporting, satire, fiction and commentary, has utilized their Facebook page to provide content only to people who “like” the page. For a week, fans of the New Yorker will be able to read an exclusive article by novelist Jonathan Franzen. The article is called “Farther Away: Robinson Crusoe, David Foster Wallace, and the island of solitude” and involves Franzen rereading Robinson Crusoe, stranding himself on the supposed island that was the inspiration for the novel.

Here is the announcement via Facebook:

And here is the “fans only” page where the article is available:

The New Yorker runs a semi-paywall where some articles are available on the site and some require a subscription to read.

This kind of Facebook-only promotion isn’t new to media. Artists like Lil Wayne, Jennifer Lopez and Kanye West have all released songs exclusively through Facebook. It will be nice to see print media offer rewards more often for engaging through social media.

Speaking to Bloggasm, the New Yorker’s director of public relations Alexa Cassanos had this to say:

We have a million subscribers, but we only – I shouldn’t say ‘only’ because it’s a great number – but we have about 200,000 fans on Facebook. Obviously we think that that number could be bigger. And we’d also like to have people ‘like’ us or engage with us who aren’t subscribers. Who are maybe fans of Jonathan Franzen, or who love fiction, or who like David Foster Wallace, or people who may have had no idea that The New Yorker was on Facebook.

Google, IAC Extend Partnership Through 2016

Procrastination and a fear of commitment apparently didn’t enter the equation when it came to renewing a longstanding search and advertising agreement between Google and IAC. This morning, IAC announced that the two companies have extended their deal through March of 2016.

The original deal wasn’t set to expire until the end of 2012, so the timing of this development comes as a bit of a surprise. Most people and organizations cut things a little closer, and a lot could change between now and then in terms of search technology or even the value of a dollar (economists seem to mention the word “inflation” a lot these days).

Today’s announcement signals that Google’s been an excellent partner for IAC, anyway, which is good news for both sides.

The announcement could even push other companies to give the idea of a search and advertising deal with Google a second look.

Greg Blatt, the CEO of IAC, stated, “Our Search business has grown meaningfully over the past five years, from $58 million in Operating Income Before Amortization in 2006 to $125 million last year, and generated pre-tax free cash flow in excess of $500 million over that period. The industry continues to grow at attractive rates and we have every opportunity for continued growth and success.”

Unfortunately for investors, not all the news is so cheery, as both companies’ stocks are sinking today. Google’s stock is down 0.35 percent and IAC’s stock is down 1.29 percent at the moment, although there are sure to be many other factors at work.

Facebook Ups Ad Prices 40%

The first quarter of 2011 started off strong in the U.S. for online marketing, with search marketing growing 17 percent year-over-year, according to a new report from Efficient Frontier.

Facebook advertising is getting more competitive, with Cost Per Clicks (CPCs) increasing by 40% Quarter on Quarter (QoQ). Display advertising also showed positive signs with a 300% increase in exchange ad inventory and a 30% Cost Per Thousand (CPM) decline, indicating gains in reach and efficiency within the ad exchanges.

Facebook-Spend

“The strong showing for digital marketing in the first quarter of 2011 was in line with our prediction of a 15% to 20% increase in spend in 2011,” said David Karnstedt, President and CEO, Efficient Frontier.

“We’re also seeing great demand for Facebook’s ad products as the social networking giant’s ad offerings continue to evolve. This is all solid evidence of an economic recovery, and that marketers are seeing tremendous results when they intelligently allocate their marketing spend and optimize across channels.”

Google continues to have the majority of overall market share in SEM spend and clicks since the Bing-Yahoo! integration. However, Bing’s ROI is currently higher than Google’s ROI. Bing’s ROI has increased 10% YoY while Google’s ROI has decreased by 12% YoY. While the revenue per click (RPC) on Bing is 12% lower than Google, the CPCs on Bing are also lower than the CPCs on Google, which is driving Bing’s higher ROI.

Efficient Frontier saw significant momentum in Facebook advertising throughout the last several quarters. Advertisers want to take advantage of the full capabilities in the Facebook Marketplace to engage with their fans and promote their brands. Because of this, spend on Facebook is growing. The analysis shows CPCs have grown by 44% QoQ, indicating that Facebook is becoming more competitive as advertisers realize its significant value.

Nasa's LCROSS mission proves once and for all there is water on the Moon

A new chapter in space exploration has been opened up after Nasa confirmed that their mission to bomb the Moon had found "significant quantities" of frozen water.

Scientists said the "exciting" findings had gone "beyond expectations" as fully formed ice was found in a crater on the planet.

They said that the ice – thought to be in granules mixed with grains of Moon dust – heralded a major leap forward in space exploration and boosted hopes of a permanent lunar base.

The water was found in one mile high plume of debris that was kicked up by the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) last month when it crashed into the Cabeus crater near the Moon's south pole.

"We are ecstatic," said Anthony Colaprete, project scientist and principal investigator for the £49 million space mission.

"Indeed, yes, we found water. And we didn't find just a little bit, we found a significant amount."

He said in a "eureka moment" analysis of the plume of debris sprayed up by a 30 ft crater showed the equivalent of "a dozen two-gallon buckets" of water was thrown up by the impact.

"This is a great day for science and exploration," said Doug Cooke, associate administrator of LCROSS. "The remarkable results have gone beyond our expectations. It is incredibly exciting."

The identification of water-ice in the impact plume is important for purely scientific reasons, but also because a supply of water on the Moon would be a vital resource for future human exploration.

The findings, which completely contradict previous beliefs that the Moon was a dry arid place, justify the controversial mission.

It also reignites mankind's dreams of colonising Earth's only satellite.

"We're unlocking the mysteries of our nearest neighbour and, by extension, the Solar System," said Michael Wargo, chief lunar scientist at Nasa's headquarters in Washington DC.

The mission took place on 9th October and was watched by millions across the globe live on the internet.

One rocket slammed into the Cabeus crater, near the lunar southern pole, at around 5,600 miles (9,000 kilometres) per hour.

The impact sent a plume of material billowing up from the bottom of the crater, which has not seen sunlight for billions of years.

The rocket was followed four minutes later by a spacecraft equipped with cameras to record the impact. At the time the crash seemed to be disappointing as the "plume of debris" was not visible to Earth based satellites.

However analysis of the huge amount of data the spacecraft collected and from satellite's spectrometers provided definitive evidence about the presence of water.

A spectrometer examines light reflected from a substance and is able to identify their composition.

Over the last decade, scientists have found some hints of underground ice on the moon's poles, mainly in the form of compounds of hydrogen but this is the best evidence yet.

The discovery is expected to have major implications for the future of lunar exploration, and a ready supply of water could help set up lunar bases or launch missions to Mars.

Mr Colaprete said that it should be possible to purify the water for drinking even though it appeared to mixed with poisonous methanol.

Only 12 men, all Americans, have ever walked on the Moon, and the last to set foot there were in 1972, at the end of the Apollo missions.

But Nasa's ambitious plans to put US astronauts back on the moon by 2020 to establish manned lunar bases for further exploration to Mars under the Constellation project are increasingly in doubt.

Nasa's budget is currently too small to pay for Constellation's Orion capsule, a more advanced and spacious version of the Apollo lunar module, as well as the Ares I and Ares V launchers needed to put the craft in orbit.

A key review panel appointed by President Barack Obama said existing budgets are not large enough to fund a return mission before 2020.

As well as a possible site for a base, the permanently shadowed regions could hold a key to the history and evolution of the solar system, much as an ice core sample taken on Earth reveals ancient data. In addition, water, and other compounds represent potential resources that could sustain future lunar exploration.
