Julian Schnabel at Colnaghi Gallery

Colnaghi Gallery is Londons host to the exhibition of Julian Schnabel's large scale Polaroids. All photos are taken with a Polaroid Land Camera 20 x 24 inch. Its amazing, even at 20 inch, the photographs are instant. There are only 6 of these cameras EVER MADE in the world - to this date. And there are only 2 that are available to hire.

The photographs are all taken by Schnabel, even when some look like they may not have been, as he features his portrait in quite a few. His friends are amongst the people captured- including Christopher Walken and Takashi Murakami.

Schnabel is a painter, sculpture and photographer. Not only this, but he has directed films such as Before Night Falls - with Javier Bardem - and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. He also directed - my favourite - Basquiat. He was friends with Jean Michel and also had his first solo show at the Mary Boone Gallery in New York.

Colnaghi Gallery also celebrates its 250th anniversary this year - it's been around since 1760. Remarkable. The show runs until 12th November.

Art brings you into the eternal present every time you see it in person. Traditionally, photography is supposed to capture an event that has passed, but that is not what I'm looking for.

Photography brings the past into the present when you look at it; it is called art.
A photograph that I'm attracted to allows a detail to rise of its own accord.
-Julian Schnabel
